Lose for Good
I just realized that I skipped last week. I guess with school getting back in session, I have lost a bit of time :)
I hope you have been able to embrace the last two meeting topics. Learning how to set small goals, stepping stones if you will, make every journey much more enjoyable and attainable. Making interim goals keeps success very close and much more motivating. You are never far away from the next success!
Last week we talked about the "zones" we find ourselves in. Have you learned to live in the Comfort Zone, not too full or too hungry? Have you learned to spend less time in the sedentary zone, and get out and enjoy this beautiful weather? Take some time to read pages 52-59 of your week one Eating Wisely booklet and really learn more about living in the Comfort Zone!
Now this week we are introducing a wonderful new program to Weight Watchers that will not only help you to "Lose for Good," but this campaign will help the weight we lose, help others for good! This is really exciting and very timely! Come and join us in a great movement to help yourself and others all over the world!!

- 2 cup grape tomatoes, or cherry tomatoes, cut in half (or quartered, if large)
- 1/4 cup basil, fresh, cut into ribbons, divided

- 1/4 tsp black pepper, freshly ground, or more to taste
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 450ºF. Coat a large roasting pan with cooking spray.

- When green beans are finished, remove from oven and spoon tomato mixture into pan; toss thoroughly. Serve hot, room temperature or chilled, topped with remaining 2 tablespoons of basil. Yields about 1 cup per serving.
Notes
- This is the perfect side for a burger, grilled chicken or steak. It's equally delicious served on mixed greens drizzled with balsamic vinegar, with herbed brown rice, or added to marinara sauce and then tossed with pasta and topped with shredded cheese.

Game Point!!

Last week, Joyce, in Payson's meeting, shared a great strategy for keeping control in tough situations. She shared that when she is faced with a difficult food situation, she asks herself, "How do I want to feel when I am done?" "How do I want to feel on the scale tomorrow?" These questions really help her to make better choices, the better part of the time. Her wonderful insight has already helped me, personally, a TON!!! You just never know where you are going to hear the next little bit of advice that will just make all the difference in the world! Hey, that was in a meeting I heard that, right? GET INTO A MEETING
The Olympics are on their way and to honor this, this week in meeting we are going to be talking about the fact that how we FEEL about the activities we do really can make a big difference for us. Our attitudes about activity are what help up to keep going!
I hope you all are continuing to have a great summer! Take care and see you soon!

Margaret's Poem
Evening is the time of day
When mornings commitments fade away.
And losing weight must be steady
So I must get my mindset ready.
So when these cravings come past three
I want to remember the "Morning Me."
Who sets a goal and sees the end
Let "evening me" be "morning me's" friend.
Remember what choices will fill the bill
Use that wonderful, selective will.
I'm the only person who can make me win
So choose the food to make me thin!

Mix and let sit for 10 mins:
3 cups All Bran ( cereal)
2 1/2 cups warm water or coffee (regular or decaf)
Add:
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 box Krusteaz Fat Free Brownie Mix ( prepare as directed on the box)
Bake @ 350 for 30 minutes
makes 24 muffins. They are best if they sit in fridge in baggie over night.
I have also put a packet of splenda in the chocolate ones.
I have used the Fat Free blueberry and the Cranberry-orange mixes. I add extra fresh or frozen blueberries to the blueberry and extra cranberries to the cranberry.
Carolyn's Gelatin Cheesecake
1 (12-ounce) container low-fat (1 percent) cottage cheese
2 (0.3-ounce) boxes sugar free strawberry gelatin, plus 1 box (recommended: Jell-O)
2 ready-made light graham cracker crusts
1 pint fresh strawberries, plus extra for garnish
1 (8-ounce) container frozen light whipped topping, thawed
Put cottage cheese in a blender. Make 2 boxes of the gelatin, using 1 cup of hot and 1 cup of cold water. At once, before it jells, add to cottage cheese. Blend until smooth. Pour evenly into crusts and refrigerate until set. Cut up fruit and place on top of pie. Make remaining package of gelatin as per instructions on box. Pour it on top of fruit and put it in refrigerator until set. Put whipped topping on top. Garnish with more fruit. This makes 2 pies. 3 to 4 POINTS per 1/8th of the pie.

Why I am Walking!
Last year, the week after the event, my sister-in-law's mother died after a 17 year battle with breast cancer. She never quit fighting, but more importantly, she never quit LIVING. At her funeral, Elder David A. Bednar spoke and quoted Elder Neil A Maxwell's comments about what he had learned during his battle with cancer. He told Bednar, "It is far more important to NOT SHRINK, than it is to survive."
So many of the wonderful women in our lives face this disease, and they live each day, and fight each day, with such honor and courage. Let us honor them and fight along side of them.
Please come walk with us and share in this great celebration of their courage, beauty and lives!
Making Strides is Back!
We are gearing up for the American Cancer Society "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Event" again this year, October 11, 2008. There is a link below to sign up for my team. This year we are going to be called "NEVER SURRENDER!" This is in honor of our many loved ones who are currently fighting breast cancer and those who have fought so hard and are no longer with us.
The walk last year was GREAT! The t-shirts will be $6 again. If you cannot participate, please feel free to make a donation if you would like to. To sign up or make a donation click the link below.
Let's have the biggest team there and really support our sisters, mothers, daughters and friends in this great cause to find a cure for breast cancer!

Destination- Weigh Loss!
What a great weekend we are having! I hope ya'll are enjoying this beautiful "finally" summer weather!
How is National Self-Indulgence Week going? It is so important to take care of yourself on a regular basis and it is very important to remember that you can do it within the guidelines of either the Flex Plan or the Core Plan. Working in the yummy num nums into your plan will really keep your satisfaction level up and the world a better place. Don't forget our "non-food" ways to self indulge, a massage, a bubble bath or especially, a good book! If it has been forever since you treated yourself in a "non-food" way, look back to the past for a few reminders.
Now... in case you went a little overboard with the whole "self-indulgence" thing- be sure to hit a meeting this week to discuss how we can bring ourselves back on track. This road we travel to a healthier life can meander a bit
See you soon and Congratulations

Challenge Tip #5
I want you to "move it". Yep- get out there and get going. Turn on the radio and shake it for a few songs. Put on the roller blades and cruise the neighborhood. Dust off that bike and feel the wind in your hair (that is under a helmet :). Pull weeds for 20 minutes (or 20 hours if it is my garden). I don't care what you do- just do something a little out of the ordinary, a smidge out of your comfort zone maybe. "I like to MOVE IT MOVE IT, I like to MOVE IT MOVE IT!" Anna's Favorite Jello Salad
16 - 1/2 Cup servings
Ingredients:
1 small pkg dry, powder Jell-O Sugar Free any flavor
2 cup Crushed Pineapple In Its Own Juice, drained WELL!
1 cup canned unsweetened mandarin oranges, drained well
24 oz fat-free cottage cheese
8 oz Cool Whip Free Whipped Topping
Mix all ingredients together well, except cool whip. Fold in Cool Whip last. Refrigerate. Ooo La La!
Challenge Tip #4
If you are headed out to dinner this weekend- have a game plan IN ADVANCE! Go to your Dining Out Companion, E-tools, or the restaurants website. Make a plan and stick to it. Restaurants are FINE and a great place to eat, but they can be VERY tricky. Knowing the POINT values before you go will help you stay on track. Knowing the POINT values before you go will let you feel comfortable and able to enjoy your meal, worry and guilt free.
*** Don't be afraid to ask for a doggie bag when your food comes- the serving sizes are HUGE and most can be split in half and saved for lunch (or dinner) the next day ***

Challenge Tip #3
Ready for tip #3?
BANISH the BLT's! And I am not talking about the sandwiches! I am addressing those nasty little "bites, licks, and tastes!" EVERYTHING we put into our mouths has a POINTS value. EVERYTHING!!!! So here is the challenge- mark one POINT for EVERY blt you take. I mean it- one little bite of your sons PB & J, one nibble of a cookie or taste of tonight's dinner. Mark 1 POINT gone forever :) This is the only way to combat this habit- If you BITE it you WRITE it! No justifications, no pretending that it was so small it has zero POINTS (even if it is).
***exception to the rule- if your rabbit will eat it, you can too- no POINTS :) ***

Challenge Tip #2
Tip #2 Shake up those POINT values!
If you always eat 4 POINTS for breakfast, eat 6. If you always have 8 POINTS for dinner, have 6. If you eat a 6 POINT snack at night, make it a 2 POINTer. If you have a one POINT snack at 10 AM, make it a 2 POINTer. If you already vary your POINT values from meal to meal and from day to day, then try dividing your Daily POINTS Target by five. Have five meals, spaced evenly throughout your day. Do ya get my drift? This is just one more way to throw a curve ball at ourselves. This not only keeps our bodies guessing, but it really brings some life back into our sometimes monotonous routine.

Challenge Tip #1
Tip #1 EAT SOMETHING NEW AND DIFFERENT!
We become very complacent and routine in what we eat. By eating something new or different we will measure this new thing. We will calculate the points. We will also give our body the challenge of eating something different and new. Our bodies are very clever and conservative. They really get good at dealing with the "norm". Shake things up a bit. If you always have oatmeal for breakfast, have an egg on whole wheat toast or a smoothie.
Try something new TODAY!! :)

Challenge June 2008!
Your Challenge, should you chose to accept it is: Let's (you and me) follow the plan perfectly for the next seven days. I mean it - perfectly. AND, lets do some sort of movement/activity/
exercise for six out of the next seven days. Let's stay within our points budget, drink enough water,
have two healthy oils and and two servings of milk every day, and have 5 servings of fruits
or veggies every day. Do you think it's possible? Can we do it?! How many of you are
willing to take this challenge? Starting tomorrow, June 3, let's see how much this newsletter
group can lose in 7 days.
So, if you come to my meeting on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday, try to come to my scale and tell
me how it's going. If you have to come on anther day, email me and tell me how it's going and how much you've lost. There are ~150 people on my mailing list right now, so do you think we can lose 150 pounds by next Tuesday/Wednesday? I've got the paper clips, do you have the guts?
What do you say???

Sustaining Motivation
It really feels like the nice weather is here to stay! Yeah!! My watch tan line is even returning :)
This week in meeting we will be looking at many great ways to keep our motivation alive during our relaxing summer festivities. We all know (by doing our homework last week) exactly what we want to have happen by Labor Day in September. We have developed our Winning Outcome and have come up with the steps we need to take to get there. This week we are looking at one of our Helpful Habits and one of our Tools for Living that will help us to keep our motivation where it needs to be to fulfill our Wining Outcome.
I hope to see you all in the meetings this week and have a great first week of June :) I leave you with my favorite quote about motivation :)
"People often say that motivation doesn't last. Well, neither does bathing-that's why we recommend it daily."

Families, Friends and Holiday Eating
Any-who, this week we are hitting right into the crux of many of our weight-loss trauma- the family parties! Ba na! We love to get together with our friends and families all summer long and just munch and crunch and whittle these beautiful days away! Now just because we are getting together, we don't have to toss all of our newly formed (and forming) Helpful Habits. {subliminal message coming... take the Habit Profile in your week three materials :} Our food related get togethers are fun and an important part of our lives. Come to meeting this week to really focus on some things we can do TODAY to help us manage these little bumps on our journey to a healthier self!!!
Oh, and don't forget- all of your leaders (especially me :), want to hear about your most creative ways to get in that little bit of "moving more" this week!
Remember the following quote when you don't think that your insight and comments in meetings make a difference! You never know when the things you share may be the answer to another members problems!!

I just love this poem!
People are often unreasonable, illogical and self-centered; Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, People may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives; Be Kind anyway.
If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies; Succeed anyway.
If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you; Be honest and frank anyway.
What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight; Build anyway
If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous; Be happy anyway.
The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow; Do good anyway.
Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough; Give the world the best you've got anyway.
You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and God; It is never between you and them anyway.
At my sister-in-law's mothers funeral last fall, David Bednar quoted Neil A Maxwell's lesson he had learned from fighting cancer, he stated. "It is more important to not shrink, than it is to survive."
Many times in our lives we will only do things if we are assured that the outcome will be exactly what we want it to be. If something seems hard or there is a possibility that we won't succeed, we wont even try. Our character is not based on our successes, but on our valiant attempts! Our character is based on our integrity and the choices we make each day.
I realize that this is a blog for weight loss and motivation- I realize that your weight loss journey, like mine, is probably different than you might have planned. But here is the deal, by continuing to plug along, making the best choices you can each day (and of course attending your meetings :) you will make progress. Your life will improve in quality EVERY DAY!
We can't always see the outcome of our daily choices, but we can rest assured that every good choice we make is a success in and of itself. Every day we work toward a positive goal is a day well spent.
Hang in there and have a GREAT day!!

Thank You Thank You Thank You
You know, with each tough situation we face in our lives, we are able to see many of our strengths and some of our weaknesses. These times of trials can be great blessings and opportunities to grow.
Thank you again, so much for your love and concern!
Here is my new favorite quote by Thomas Alva Edison:

Weight Management: What a Bargain!
I have a few moments, so I thought I'd send you a note on time (well, a little early) this week.
Sometimes we think that it is too costly to pay our membership fees and buy the healthy foods we need, but hey- what is the real cost of healthy living? The real costs come from UN-healthy living. Come to meeting this week and join in our discussion of the many great ways that living healthfully saves us money now, and in the future!
See you soon! Remember that each opportunity we have to choose healthy living is there for the taking. Make one more good choice today- make another tomorrow, and before you know it, your life will be strewn with healthy habits you didn't even know you had :)

Better Late Than NEVER :)
I am so sorry my email is late this week :(. Life has been a little "fuller" than normal and I am just catching my breath :) I hope all is well with all of you!
This weeks meeting topic is HOT!! How many times do we head out for dinner or order in take-out because the clock just hit 6:30 and everyone is going to STARVE??? This weeks we will be discussing strategies for overcoming the "what's for dinner?- and I mean NOW!" syndrome. With a few tricks up your sleeve, and a little planning, this "problem area" can see some major improvements- PDQ.
Now- last week I told you about a devil of a fantastic cake that was 8 POINTS per slice. I worked it down to about 3 POINTS per slice! Yes- bravo to me! It is posted on my blog, along with the black bean brownies. There is also a new link to all of the recipes that have been posted to the blog on the top right.
Have a fantastic week and see you in the meetings!!!

In the blender, puree the black beans (DO NOT DRAIN) and ¼ C water. In a mixing bowl add brownie mix and 2 t baking powder, mix well. Then add the pureed beans and water and the eggs. Mix with a wooden spoon until just mixed. DO NOT OVER MIX. Bake in a greased, 9x13 glass baking dish at 350 for 30-35 minutes. Do not under bake. When the brownies are done they will pull away from the sides of the pan. Let cool for about 10 min and them cover tightly with plastic wrap and let finish cooling. German Chocolate Upsidedown Cake
1 package German chocolate pudding-type cake dry mix
3 items egg white(s)
1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
8 oz fat-free cream cheese
1 cup Splenda
1/2 cup fat-free sour cream
1 cup sweetened coconut flakes
1/2 cup chopped pecans
1 cup powdered sugar
Place parchment paper in the bottom of a 9x13 baking dish. Sprinkle the bottom of the pan with the coconut and pecans. Mix the German Chocolate cake mix with the applesauce, 3 egg whites, and water from the box instructions. Beat well and pour over the coconut and pecans. In a mixer, mix, cream cheese, sour cream, splenda and powdered sugar. Beat really well. Dollop the cream cheese mixture over the entire cake, 1 Tablespoon at a time. Bake at 350 for about 45-55 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Remove from oven and cool completely. Cover and let set overnight on the counter. It tastes a TON better the next day :) Cut and serve- turning over the cake, so the bottom is on top. 24 servings, 3 Points each. (The original is by Sharla Webb and DROP DEAD DIVINE at 8 POINTS per slice :) *note from the chef- "lower the oven to 320 and bake for 20 min, then raise to 335 to finish, it takes a little longer, but the cream cheese mixture has time to sink to the bottom. Otherwise, it sometimes doesn’t go all the way through (depending on the oven)."
Mango Peach Vinaigrette
1-2 T balsamic vinegar
salt and pepper to taste
0 POINTS
This is so great over any green salad. Add some grilled chicken (3 POINTS) to make it a meal :)

Would you like fruit with that?
The bulbs are blooming, the grass is greening, and the air is WARMING!! Yeah! Spring is finally here! (right?)
Now with all of the beautiful weather, we are all getting ready for the fruits of summer! What a perfect time to look at ways to help those around us, help us, to keep on track with our healthier life styles. This weeks meeting topic is all about how to covertly or maybe not-so-covertly get those around us on board. Lets face it, if we are going to make changes to our lives, those with whom we share our lives, really need to be a support to us. These shifts in our relationships can be a little rocky, but with some tools and helpful habits, we can make some huge strides in getting our co-workers and loved ones, extending the support we need.
Now, I do have a recipe for you, Upside-Down German Chocolate Cake, but it is the "DEVIL" right now- about a million points per slice. My sister-in-laws, sister-in-law, made it for us over the weekend in Denver and I am going to fiddle with it to come up with a "lower-POINT" version. I apologize for the teaser- but hey... when it is ready, it's gonna knock your socks OFF!
As for last week's meeting topic, how are those excuses to avoid activity going? Did you blast any of them out of the water, per my meeting challenge last week? I sure hope so. Remember- what and how much you eat is EVERYTHING- but activity is the magic that keeps it all together. Plain and simple.
Mike Huckabee said: "When people ask, "How do you find time to exercise?" I respond, "I don't find the time, I make the time! If you wait until you find time, you will never--hear me--never find it. You must make time for taking care of your body just as you would make time to go to work, to shower, to eat, or to take in a movie."
Monday, April 14, 2008
This weeks meeting topic is so timely- it is nice and beautiful outside, and time to get going. We have all made every excuse to skip the exercise, but is that really going to do anything for us? Please come to the meeting this week where we will dissolve some of our standard excuses and reasons for not moving more. We'll look at ways to regain some motivation to move more and reap the benefits!
Have a great spring break and I'll see you OUTSIDE!!!- Don't forget to take the new poll and any old ones you may have missed!
Here is my new favorite quote- it just plain made me laugh!
"You're only given a little spark of madness. You mustn't lose it."

Lighten Up!!!
In baked goods (muffins, brownies and cakes) applesauce or pureed beans, can be swapped for all or most of the oil. The 98% fat free Cream of Mushroom and Chicken soups are nigh undetectable. In most recipes, light or fat free Sour Cream are also hard to tell from their full fat counterparts. In every instance, the Light cream cheese can be swapped for it's full fat brother, and in many recipes the fat free cream cheese works just as well. Corn tortillas are much lower in POINTS than flour tortillas.
Be sure to ask in meetings for specific substitutions you are looking for. All Weight Watcher members become quite resourceful in the kitchen to lower their favorite foods POINT values.
We are in this together- we are all looking for the most food for the lowest POINT values! Keep the ideas coming and bring them to meetings with you!

Episode III- Trigger Environments
I hope ya'll were able to make it to a meeting this week! What a phenomenal topic... the ever infamous Trigger Feelings! I hope you all took away some helpful strategies to begin to put a dent in emotional eating. We sure have a myriad of emotions that drive us to the pantry! Be sure to do your homework and really use the Reframing Worksheet you started in meeting. It is all about having an arsenal of ideas ready for use, at a moments notice. Be sure to let us all know how it went for you this week.
Now- this week is the third installment of our Trigger Trilogy. We will be taking a look at our environments. Are they healthy and supportive of your goals or do they need a bit of Detox? The places that we spend our time, need to be safe and friendly to our healthy lifestyles (NO SNICKERS ALLOWED :). Do we need to call in the Hazmat team, or maybe some teen aged boys, to eat up all of our leftover cookies? Maybe Extreme Home Makeover? Whatever hot spots we find ourselves in, either at work or home, this week in meeting, we will be looking at ways to make our environments as "Green" as possible. (You know, "Green", like environmentally friendly and "Green", as in green light foods- whoa, am I clever ;)
Be sure to have a fabulous weekend and a great week! See you soon!
People become really quite remarkable when they start thinking that they can do things. When they believe in themselves they have the first secret of success.
